ASTM E3160-18

Purpose and Scope

ASTM E3160 is a quantitative evaluation of antibacterial performance of porous materials that have been treated with biocide to inhibit the growth of bacteria on the materials (textiles or paper).

This method was developed based on several industry standard techniques. The modifications were made and have been validated by International Biodeterioration Research Group (IBRG).

Testing

A liquid suspension of bacteria will be applied to both treated and untreated samples with antimicrobial finishes. The test will be replicated with a specified concentration of bacteria suspended in a low nutrient concentration conditions. The samples are then incubated under controlled temperature and humidity for a specified period of time. Then the samples are neutralized to deactivate active substance and agitated to recover surviving organisms.

The changes in the size of microorganism populations are calculated in relation to the number present on the untreated samples.

Unlike other methods such as AATCC 100, ISO 20743, and JIS L1902, very specific parameters are defined within the method to limit potential variability seen between laboratories. This will ensure better reproducibility and repeatability between and within laboratories. This protocol is designed to be used to identify antimicrobial treated article regardless of physical properties or chemical composition

*Note*: A minimum of 20grams of treated samples is required. (Optional) 20 grams of untreated samples.

Data Analysis

Percent reduction of bacteria by the specimen treatment against test organism will be provided.

Test Organisms

Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922, Gram Negative)
